Dental Sealants
Protect Your Smile Before Cavities Start
Dental sealants provide a simple, painless way to shield teeth from decay.

Dental sealants are a highly effective preventive treatment that involves applying a thin coating to the surface of teeth, especially the back teeth to protect them from harmful bacteria and food particles. These areas, with their deep grooves and crevices, are often difficult to reach with a toothbrush and floss, making them more susceptible to cavities. Sealants act as a barrier, sealing off these grooves and preventing bacteria and food from becoming trapped, significantly reducing the risk of tooth decay.
Sealants are particularly beneficial for children and are typically recommended as soon as their adult molars emerge, usually around the age of 6 and 12. This early intervention helps to protect their newly erupted teeth from decay, ensuring long-term oral health as they grow. However, dental sealants can also be beneficial for adults, especially if they have deep grooves in their molars or are at higher risk for cavities.
While sealants provide excellent cavity prevention, it’s important to note that they are not a substitute for a thorough and consistent at-home oral hygiene routine. Both children and adults should brush and floss their teeth at least twice a day, ideally after meals, to maintain optimal oral health. Proper brushing involves brushing for two to three minutes with fluoride toothpaste and ensuring that all tooth surfaces are cleaned effectively. It’s also essential to floss before brushing to remove food particles and plaque from between the teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Additionally, rinsing with an anticavity mouthwash after brushing can further help to reduce plaque buildup and prevent the formation of cavities, keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
