Why do I need a cavity filling?
A dental filling is used to repair a tooth that’s been damaged by a cavity. It’s usually found after an exam and x-rays are taken.
How long does the cavity filling take?
The time it takes to get a cavity filling typically depends on the size and location of the cavity, but it usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes. A simple filling in a small cavity might only take around 20 minutes, while a larger or more complex filling could take closer to an hour.
If you’re getting multiple fillings or if the cavity is in a tricky spot, it may take a bit longer. Your dentist will guide you on what to expect for your specific situation.
How long does the numbing medication last?
The duration of numbing medication after a dental appointment can vary depending on the type of anesthetic used and the area treated. Generally, the numbing effect lasts between 1 to 3 hours, though some people might feel it wear off a bit sooner or later.
After the numbing wears off, you may feel a bit of tingling or mild discomfort as the sensation returns to the area. It’s best to avoid chewing or drinking hot liquids until the numbness completely wears off to prevent accidentally biting your cheek, lip, or tongue.
